Brief running history:
I started running on a treadmill in February 2007. It was primarily to get in shape. Afterward, I decided I wanted to try running outdoors and knew it would be so much easier if I were doing it with a group. The ARRC Web site seemed the most NEW-runner friendly. I remember reading, “don’t know your pace, we’ll help you find it.” My goal was to run a 10 miler. With ARRC I ran Cherry Blossom (2008) and soon was looking ahead to my 50thbirthday. I decided to run a marathon as a personal celebration. I wanted it to be a good run so I ran Marine Corps (2008) to practice and see what I would need to do to make National (2009) better. My treadmill training came in handy when ARRC cancelled a run due to ice on the trail – I ran my 12 miles indoors.  I had that machine smok’n. And I’m sure I had to start it over at least twice because of the time settings. That may have been the last time I ran a treadmill. Since then, I’ve run those two marathons each year.  Last year, I missed qualifying for NYC by 14 seconds in the Wilson Bridge Half Marathon (2010), but was fortunate to have been drawn in the lottery. I ran NYC in November (2011). I also began triathlons.  I’ve completed four – DC (2010 and 2011), Columbia, MD (2011) and Nation’s (2011).  2012 will be a busy year.  I’m training for DC’s SunTrust Rock and Roll and Marine Corps marathons as well as continuing triathlons including Eagleman, a half-ironman 70.3 in June.Race Counts:

Favorite running experience:
I like running over the bridges at sunrise.  I also enjoy running in a light rain and over the winter, I had an opportunity to run in light snow fall – beautiful.  I don’t know if it is my favorite, but certainly one of the most memorable is running across Memorial Bridge during the impending tropical storm of Spring 2008.  We finished our 16-mile run with four minutes to spare before the heavy rain came.
Favorite race: National Marathon (2011) It was my first under 4 hours (3:47:26)
Favorite race medal: It’s a tie – my first and whichever one is most recent
Favorite race shirt: Battle of the Boulevard (2009).  It’s never given me nipple rub
  What keeps you motivated:
I always keep a big race ahead so if the current one isn’t going well, I can take something from it to improve and run that next one better.
Advice to newbies:
Listen to your body. It’ll tell you what you need to know. Hydrate.  Hydrate.  Did I say Hydrate –   Washington is brutal in the summer.  Body Glide is your friend (see favorite shirt above).  Take naps (it’s that listening to your body again). And now I’m stealing (it’s the best form of flattery) but what I appreciated hearing from others is train hard and run your own best race, time isn’t important, what matters is that you enjoy the experience and finish strong.
What do you do when you’re not running:  I enjoy gardening, movies, sharing meals with family and friends, and traveling.  I’m also a big fan of the Brit wit shows on PBS.
